In a classic “The report of my death is an exaggeration” situation, the death of Canadian folk/pop artist Gordon Lightfoot was prematurely announced by some big publishing institutions including Canwest and the New York Daily News. Rumours of the death first surfaced on Twitter, and were seemingly confirmed by one of GL’s associates, after which the story was published, and then immediately retracted when Gordon’s manager got in touch with the paper.
Embarrassing perhaps, but illustrative of the modern trend of rushing to publish before the facts are confirmed that makes bloggers and reporters so vulnerable to manipulation of Wikipedia pages.
In an adjunct to my vociferous defence of Twitter and it’s web 2.0 cousins in that John Taylor post, I thought readers might be interested in a Twitter contact list that Bruce Houghton of Hypebot (a music industry news site) is putting together. Keep yourself informed, and pester decision makers in the industry to help you out. You can do this even more easily by downloading Tweetdeck, a little program that lets you find out who’s talking about certain search terms (your band’s name for instance), and different groups of people that you’re following.

Music marketing these days is very tough and most artists will go to any lengths to sell you their new projects. 50 Cent is trying to drum up some support but I think this is going the wrong way about it. Everyone hates SPAMMERS!

Many musicians, both small and big, are tweeting away as we speak (i.e. ?uestlove of The Roots, Imogen Heap, Sonic Youth, etc.). The following is a list of five Twitter applications for musicians and bands aimed towards building a community around their music. For a link to the original source at IndieMusicTech.com, please click here.
1) twitpic: send photos from your mobile phone which will post links to them on twitter; a quick way to give your fans a visual look at what your band is currently doing (for example: recording, rehearsal, sound check, etc.)
2) twiddeo: similar to twitpic, but for video, allowing you to provide short video clips of your shows, interviews, touring adventures, etc.
3) twtpoll: ask your fans a question and get a response via twitter (e.g. what cities should we play next?)
4) twitzu: create an event (e.g. meet and greet) with description and location info and send it to your twitter followers and receive RSVPs from them
5) tweetchat – create rooms in Twitter to post tweets about a particular topic (e.g. your latest release)
