Jelli Radio has just announced funding over $7 million. Sometimes the worlds of online and terrestrial radio frequently intermingle, but Jelli is taking the art to a new level. The Jelli platform allows users to program terrestrial streams from an online interface, a crowdsourced programming concept.
The Director-General of the BBC has come under a lot of fire this week for his proposals to axe two radio stations and drop a lot of content from the website in order to redirect funding to improve the quality of programming across the rest of the BBC’s network. The stars of music and media have been laying their scorn on the DG’s plans, and the vast bulk of comments on the “putting quality first” blog post he put up on the BBC’s site were resoundingly negative, chastising him for contradicting himself by taking down some of the best, highest quality content, and defending what are clearly their own favourite services.
For my part I can’t help feeling that any announcement of cutbacks is going to provoke complaints from the people who are negatively affected. There are definitely great programmes on 6 Music and the Asian Network, but if the stations are to be closed, there’s no reason the good bits can’t be cherry picked and put on the other stations with a broader reach, swapping out for worse shows, gaining listeners and improving the quality of service for the great unwashed that haven’t discovered the newer stations, or simply don’t have DAB radios. That said, there are certainly other places the budget could have been cut from, Graham Norton’s salary, for one.
A leaner, sharper BBC that provides an alternative to, instead of adding to the morass of commercialised drivel on the increasing number of other stations is something that I fully support. Il-gu cha has designed an analog radio, the R1 radio. The tuning is done by moving the radio from left to right and volume is controlled by rolling the radio forward and backward, watch the video, here. I like this design!

SIRIUS XM Radio Inc. (Nasdaq: SIRI) announced today that it received notice from the Nasdaq Stock Market on September 15, 2009 that its common stock had closed below $1.00 per share for 30 consecutive business days and is therefore not in compliance with the Nasdaq Marketplace Rules.
Most people have announced that this is the end of traditional online radio as we know it. Online radio is an area in which is probably behind most others in terms of innovation, but with Last.fm, Pandora and online music streaming services why listen to an online radio where I have no choice in what I listen too, compared to streaming where I get to choose what I listen too.

Last.fm is to takeover four HD radio stations off CBS in the US including, New York, LA, Chicago and San Francisco. All stations will have the same play-list, which will be determined by the outcome of the weekly charts according to the last.fm website, to feature a mix of music aggregated and influenced by the service’s user-generated weekly charts. Twinned with performances and interviews from its new New York studios. The new station will also be accessable through the website, as well as the already established CBS radio. Which is good news for fans across the pond as the new HD radio stations will only be accessible to HD radio receivers in the new areas: New York, Los Angeles, Chicago and San Francisco.
The broadcast will begin on October 5th, and as well as being able to find it through the named sites it will be available through the relevant related apps through iPhone, iPod Touch and some Blackberries.
