New Hot Chip Video – Shoop Da Woop, I Feel Better

mm+ts=psRemember Peter Serafinowicz? Yeah you do… that guy who did the voice for Darth Maul… the ****head housemate from Sean of the Dead… looks a bit like a cross between Tony Slattery and Marcus Mumford. Well, after his short lived run with the imaginitively titled ‘The Peter Serafinowicz’ show on the BBC, he has been allowed to run amok with Hot Chip’s new video for their track ‘I Feel Better’, taken from their latest album, ‘One Life Stand’. What can you expect? How about good old INRI [or maybe V'ger] firin’ his lazer and melting some boy bands.

OK GO’s New Viral Video – This Too Shall Pass

The Oxfam-chic has been abandoned in favour of boiler suits in their latest web outing – a huge Heath Robinson (OK, since they’re from Chicago, Rube Goldberg) contraption to rival the one in Honda’s Cog advert. Ironically, given the fuss they’ve been making about revenues from embedding their previous treadmill viral super-hit, the video wasn’t embeddable, but sponsorship from a certain insurance company means that we can now save you the trouble of clicking all the way over to YouTube for this little beauty:

Vevo’s Launch Lands It On It’s Feet

Vevo was born of the collaboration between YouTube and the major labels, after the long argument about revenues from YouTube’s streaming of copyrighted music and videos. Vevo has been streaming music video since December ‘09, and in that one short month, has overtaken Myspace music as the No.1 music video site in the US. Techcrunch reports the following figures, with a more detailed analysis.

Top U.S. Music Services On The Web (in unique visitors, December, 2009)

  1. Vevo: 35.4 million
  2. MySpace Music: 33.1 million
  3. AOL Music: 29.0 million
  4. Warner Music: 23.3 million
  5. MTV Networks Music: 17.6 million
  6. Yahoo! Music: 16.4 million
  7. Jango Music Network: 9.6 million
  8. ToneFuse Music Network: 8.3 million
  9. MSN Music: 6.6 million
  10. Rhapsody: 6.5 million

Most of the traffic on Vevo was driven there from YouTube, and the service isn’t available outside the States yet, but given the warm reception Vevo has recieved, look for roll-out into Europe and Asia in the near future, as well as startled reactions from their competitors.

Radiohead’s Guitarist Shoots the Rainbow With MIDEM

RadioheadHead over to the Midem blog and watch an interview in which Ed O’Brien discusses how they made a success of releasing ‘In Rainbows’ independently of any record labels, and what that success meant for their band.As one of the most important ‘game changing’ releases of recent years it’s interesting to hear O’Brien tell the big labels to sit up and take notice. Of course Radiohead had the benefits of already having been made famous working with record labels (XL, TBD, Parlophone, Capitol), and the novelty and notoriety of being one of the first big acts to give their music away, but there are lessons to be learnt.

Bob Dylan – Blonde on Blonde Wig

Bob Dylan in a blonde wigIf it wasn’t for the clear brilliance of his intellect on his Theme Time Radio Hour, I would think Mr. Zimmerman was losing the plot. He’s released a Wierd-Al-like polka Christmas song, in aid of the charity Feeding America.

“As Rolling Stone previously reported, all of Dylan’s royalties from the album benefit Feeding America and other international charities. “It’s a tragedy that more than 35 million people in this country alone — 12 million of those children — often go to bed hungry and wake up each morning unsure of where their next meal is coming from,” Dylan wrote on his official Website. “I join the good people of Feeding America in the hope that our efforts can bring some food security to people in need during this holiday season.”

Rob Sherman’s Balcony TV Session

you would make an attractive hawkRob Sherman is a very tall young man who owns a lot of musical instruments, including a ukulele, mandolin, thumb piano and full size glockenspiel. He uses them (along with his trusty Takamine acoustic guitar) to write beautiful, intriguing contemporary folk music, influenced by the likes of Mumford and Sons, Johnny Flynn, Laura Marling and Damien Rice. His music often tells stories, and paints vivid pictures of scenes and events from history and literature, made all the more pleasing by lyrics which could easily be read alone as poetry. Philosopher Blues, for example, is imaginative, thoughtful and reflective, while Oh Empire! is nostalgic and stirring. What sets Rob apart from the swathes of folkish singer-songwriter types is his conviction and passion, as well as his pleasant baritone. Joined on record by fellow folk heroes Hollie Rogers and Rowan Fisk, Rob is set to release his debut EP in the near future, and it promises to be one of the most exciting folk records of the year. He’s also written, produced and directed a play called “The God In The Well” that’s being staged in Exeter this weekend, if you happen to live in that neck of the woods.

The Beatles Rock Band Becomes Leading Music Video Game in First Month, Beating Guitar Hero 5

In its very first month on the market, The Beatles: Rock Band has jumped to the top music video game charts. According to the NPD Group, The Beatles: Rock Band out sold Guitar Hero 5. The Rock Band spin off sold more than 464,000 copies for the Wii and Xbox 360 alone, meaning that the title brought in at least $27.8 million in sales. The revenue amount still doesnt include PS3 sales or associated accessories, which Im sure would push sale through the roof.

The research firm says the success of the title helped drive a 72 percent year-over-year increase in dollar sales of music and dance games. That was a stark contrast to overall video game sales, which posted a paltry one percent year-over-year sales increase. Overall, the title was the third top game in terms of units sold, with only Halo 3: ODST and Madden NFL 10 selling more copies.

Both Guitar Hero and Rock Band series are made by the same gaming studio, MTV’s Harmonix.

Heath Ledger’s Modern Mouse Video King Rat

heath-ledger

A new music video that was directed by the late actor Heath Ledger for the Modest Mouse song “King Rat” will premier online today. Ledger presented Isaac Brock of Modest Mouse with an idea to direct a video back in January 2007 while in Australia. Ledger’s intention for the video’s theme was to raise awareness about the issue of whales that are hunted down illegally for commercial purposes off the coast of Australia each year.

The video was fully conceived down to the last detail but unfinished when Heath passed away in January of 2008. The video company The Masses (a film and music company which Heath was a partner in), completed the video in his honor with the full support of Brock.

Proceeds from iTunes video downloads in the first month of release will go toward Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, an international non-profit, marine wildlife conservation organization organization committed to ending the destruction of habitat and slaughter of wildlife in the world’s oceans in order to conserve and protect ecosystems and species.
