12 Days Of Christmas Free iTunes Downloads

What was I saying yesterday about being sick of all the music/Christmas blogging? Sigh…

This however is something well worth paying attention to. It’s not very often that Apple give things away for free, so when they do it’s essential that between us we squeeze as much as possible from them.

From the 26th of December until the 6th of January you will be able to download one free song every day from the iTunes store.

There are two ways of registering for this; 1) Sign up your email address via the 12 Days of Christmas website or 2) Downloading the iPhone app. I’ve tried both and advise the latter, especially if you’re a fan of Kylie, they seem to be offering a free EP on the iPhone app exclusively.

The website doesn’t say if there is a limited number of subscriptions, so get involved now. You can find out everything you need to know about this offer by clicking here.

A Taste of Quo: I Cant Wait for Christmas Day: Charity Christmas Number 1

Cardiff based Status Quo Tribute band “A Taste Of Quo” are entering the race for a spot in the converted Christmas charts with their 70′s hit inspired song “I Can’t Wait For Christmas Day”.

Keeping in the spirit of the festive season, the band have pledged to donate 100% of the proceedings they receive to their local Children’s Hospice: Ty Hafan

The song was written by band members Neil Waters and Jon Walker.

“Having tried to comprehend the impact that Ty Hafan must have on the lives of life limited children and their families, I really wanted to raise money to help support them. The idea of a Christmas song seemed like a fun and novel way of doing so and is something that everybody can get involved in. Hopefully people will like and decide to purchase the song and who knows, perhaps we could sneak into the charts, if we could it would be fantastic, as it would mean that we will have been successful in raising a fairly sizeable donation” says Jon.

The song is now available via iTunes, costing just 79p. http://goo.gl/Uksef and on Amazon, costing just 69p http://goo.gl/zyMvo

The Streets Christmas Single

Regular readers will remember a recent post concerning Mike Skinner’s new found love of the internet and all of the possibilites it offers for interacting with his fans.

Well, Mr. Skinner, who is currently working on his last album under the band name that made him famous, has just uploaded another treat for his fans; a Christmas song featuring The Music’s Rob Harvey.

The song is unusually upbeat for Skinner and really rather touching.

Check the video out above and please take a trip to The Streets’ remarkable website by clicking here.

On The First Day Of Christmas…

Firstly, yes, I understand the difference between the first day of Christmas and the first day of advent, but the latter doesn’t have quite as much ‘zing’ about it for a blog title. Secondly, my sincere apologies for getting swept up in Christmas hysteria (Christ-eria… sorry).

Now, I’m not a huge fan of the festive period and even less of a fan of the popular music that tends to be released around this festival. However, as with practically everything in life, there are both good, bad and terrible examples of Christmas songs.

Here are some of my favourite Christmas songs for your listening pleasure. From unlikely Christmas crooners Bob Dylan, Tom Waits and The Fall.

Let me know what you think and if I have overlooked anything @monkeyhotel

Coldplay Christmas Single To Be Released

They’ve been talking about it for over a year, but the wait is finally over. On December 1st, nobody’s favourite band Coldplay will release their much hyped Christmas single ‘Christmas Lights’.

The band have announced on their website that the song is “mid-tempo” and “in the key of G”. Releasing information like that is sure to lead to excited trouser wetting all over the globe. Irresponsible, Chris.

If the excitement is too much for you and holding off until next wednesday simply isn’t an option, at the top of this post you will find a youtube video. It has been taken from Coldplay’s appearance on 60 minutes in 2009, when “World’s most punchable face” contestant Chris Martin, whilst showing off started singing a new song that seems to fit the above description fairly accurately. At the end of the video you’ll hear him boast “that one’s going to be good”.

Yes, 2009, that’s really how long hype has existed about this song. What are the chances it will be a let down, even to the inexplicable millions of Coldplay fans?

The Self Indulgent Friday Playlist – Post Turkey Edition

Morbidly Obese SantaIf you’re anything like me at the moment, you’ll be fed up to the back teeth with meat, leaking bread sauce at every pore, and emanating a low, sprout-related rumble. It is for this reason that I’ve decided to bow to greater wisdom and accept what is given to me by my betters. However, since it as good to give as well as recieve, I will share this playlist of Spotify’s hundred [well, 94] most popular tracks this year, with you, gentle reader. Hopefully by the time you’ve listened to 6 hours of music, the Turkey will have subsided, and you can go and investigate that bit of left-over Christmas pudding.

The Self Indulgent Friday Playlist – Xmas Edition

spotifyYou know what this is going to be about: A Spotify playlist that kicks off with the best Christmas song ever – Christmas Pig by Rolf Harris, and continues with some obscure and cool stuff you hopefully won’t have heard before. Yes there is some Bing Crosby, no, there isn’t any Slade.
