Spotify have recently signed a deal with Indian record label Saregama, adding their full catalogue of over 100,000 songs to the platform in India.

Spotify launched in India last year, since then it has been attempting to gain a reasonable market share from some of the big players in the country such as Gaana and JioSaavn, each with over 100m active users.

This recent signing with Saregama will help fill the void in the catalog. Saregama is one of the oldest music labels in the world, with more than 100k retro and new age songs, from Indian music legends, in over two dozen languages. Spotify already had a deal in place with a distributor for Saregama’s catalogue, but due to a legal battle, this content was missing in India.

This news comes after Spotify’s recent partnership with Indian label Shemaroo, adding an additional 25,000 songs to the platform.

Despite growing numbers of streamers in India, still very few are paying for subscriptions, with most users opting for ad-supported free models. The Indian music streaming market is expected to pull in around $244 million revenue this year, versus the US’s $4.5 billion.

India has seen a new streaming company enter the market this year, with TikTok owned platform Resso.

Competitor JioSaavn are hoping to remain as powerful as they are in the country, with new partnerships increasing their podcast catalogue.
