Once an instrument is recorded, it may sound a bit dry, but with the right effects, this will allow the track to come to life. There a number of effects that should be at least considered for any track.

EQ – This allows you to see a representation of the frequencies within a track, thus removing or boosting a certain range, to all them to be inaudible or stand out within a mix
Reverb – Adding reverb to a track will give the impression of recording in a large space, with reflective surfaces. Presets, such as halls or small rooms give an easy way to apply any this as required.

Compression – For tracks with large dynamic range, compression will allow you to reduce this, to give a more flat output. By setting a threshold, you can tell all sound past this point, must be reduced.
