Just weeks after Ed Sheeran managed to shatter streaming records with his new album on Spotify, Drake is back to take his rightful place as the music streaming king.

Drake has taken back his rightful spot as the all-dominating commandeer of music streaming with his new “playlist” More Life destroying records in it’s first day. In the past Drake has managed to break streaming records and has spent a considerable amount of time as the top artist on music streamer Spotify.

Despite racking up an incredible 61.3 million streams on it’s first day on Spotify, it was surprisingly fresh competitor Apple Music which saw the most dedicated Drake fans. Drake’s new More Life “playlist” (Drake says it’s not an album) smashed the single-day album streams record on Apple Music racking up 89.9 million playthroughs in it’s first 24 hours on Apple’s music streaming service.

Whilst it’s impressive, Drake’s ridiculous success is par for the course with each new release with 2 years at the top of Spotify and over 3 billion streams made on ‘Views’, Drake’s album last year. What is perhaps more notable is that Apple Music was the primary platform for Drake’s new release despite his monumental influence on Spotify.

Whilst last year’s release ‘Views’ was released exclusively on Apple Music for it’s first week, More Life was released across all services. Perhaps it was Views’ limited exclusivity on Apple that’s given them the edge with Drake, but with less than half of Spotify’s 50 million subscribers and far more free users it’s a significant win for Apple. Drake also has an exclusive radio show, OVO Sound Radio, on Beats 1 – Apple’s exclusive online radio platform, which likely helped his Apple success.

More Life comes just weeks after Ed Sheeran’s new album ‘÷’ released to massive success, breaking streaming records himself across Spotify and YouTube. For the past few years streaming has been led either by Drake or Sheeran with phenomenal success, and Drake’s taken the top spot straight back from Sheeran and his own last album.
