How to stand out and get heard on SoundCloud

SoundCloud is full of amazing music and artists but being noticed in that crowd can be hard. These tips will help you stand out from the rest of them.

SoundCloud have released their latest tips for getting your music out there to as many listeners as possible in their new series. This time it’s all about making your own personal mark that distinguishes you from the other artists on SoundCloud’s massive open music platform.

Make sure your profile is up to date

  • Keep your profile pic current – unless your seventh grade school photo is the kind of look you’re going for.
  • Use your top banner image as a shout out for whatever you’re currently promoting – a new album, tour dates, new track, etc.
  • List your social media accounts and contact information in your profile description.
  • Link your tour dates to Songkick and Bandpage.
  • Highlight your top tracks using our Spotlight feature (you will need a Pro & Pro Unlimited account for this).

Drill down into SoundCloud stats and learn about top-listening countries, cities, what websites are playing your tracks, and where your listeners are located.

  • Study your stats to help with radio, brand, touring and advertising opportunities AKA know where you should go.
  • “Top country” data can be used to help pitch a new artist to a bigger name act on tour.
  • “Top city” data can be used as leverage for radio stations to play a new developing artist.
  • “Top listeners” can be your digital street team and used to help promote contests and network with fans.
  • “Top Websites” can be used to evaluate online reach as well as advertising plans.

Engage with people you collaborate with as well as other users

  • Follow the artists that you have worked with on a track. They are now your family. Get to know them.
  • Repost or Like tracks by other artists that you’re featured on. The feeling could get mutual.
  • Create playlists to help fans learn about your catalog and hook them into other artists you like.

Some SoundCloud Marketing Basics

Use these ideas to kickstart your own marketing campaign and get your SoundCloud tracks in front of the widest audience possible.

Announcements

Record an audio announcement about a tour or new music and upload it to your SoundCloud account. Make sure to encourage fans to follow your profile for updates.

Giveaways

SoundCloud’s stats mean that you have information on which of your fans stream your tracks the most. Run a contest where the person who streams a new track on SoundCloud the most in a week wins a prize. Make sure the prize is legitimate and it can actually get to the winner.

Teaser Previews

Upload a sample of a track and later replace the audio with the full version. Fan engagement on the original upload will stick since only the audio is being replaced.

Twitter Q&A/Ask Me Anything

Engage with fans on social media and get them to ask questions. Provide the answers on SoundCloud as an audio recording.

Direct message fans or record private audio tracks to send to them

Use the SoundCloud direct message feature to directly communicate with fans. You can also use real time comments on tracks as a way to be engage with fans individually.

SoundCloud Updates – Easier Navigation and Header Images

For a long time one of SoundCloud’s biggest gripes has been the profile navigation where all uploaded tracks were grouped in with their reposts and playlists. But not any more with SoundCloud’s updated profile navigation.

You will now be able to view someone’s Tracks, Playlists and Reposts separately through individual tabs as well as an Overview tab where you can access all of that user’s public activity.

The next addition is the ability to create and upload custom header images to to your profile, available right now for creators on Pro and Pro Unlimited plans and to be made gradually available to everyone. For now a gradient based on your SoundCloud profile image will be displayed until you upload your own header image.

These two new features have long been requested by SoundCloud users and SoundCloud have listened, implementing these tools for improved navigation and accessibility over the next week for users worldwide.

On their blog post SoundCloud said that they will continue to refine features based on feedback so stay tuned for more updates to your profile.

RouteNote Soundcloud Network Accounts Can Now Change Their Visual Banners Directly in Their Soundcloud Accounts

Soundcloud has just introduced a great new tool that allows any artist in the RouteNote Soundcloud Network to change their profile header after they have had one in place for the very first time.

If you want to join the RouteNote Soundcloud Network please email: soundcloud@routenote.com with your RouteNote username and Soundcloud URL.

Here’s how you can update profile header images on your own.

On the profile header image on your profile page, you’ll see a button that says “Replace Image.”

Click that and select an image to upload. The minimum image size to upload remains the same at 1240×260 pixels.

You can also zoom and reposition the image if it’s larger than 1240×260. We recommend 2480×520 to enable higher resolution images to be displayed on devices with Retina screens:

Click save and you’re set.

Note: This is only for accounts that already have a Soundcloud visual profile in place and are a part of the RouteNote Soundcloud Network.

Soundcloud Network Spotlight: Eklo – Tropical House Coming Out of Canada

Eklo is a great young Tropical House producer out of Ontario Canada. Here is a quick about Eklo in his own words.

I grew up (and currently live) in a small city in Northwestern Ontario. My roots to music started with self-taught acoustic guitar. I started recording and producing music in High School and it has been a hobby of mine ever since. I created YouTube covers and dabbled in electronic music throughout University. Currently, I work full-time and produce music on my free time. I started producing more seriously and really developing my sound in 2014. So far 2015 has been amazing and I am excited to see what’s next for “Eklo”!

We are looking forward to seeing what Eklo brings for the rest of 2015!
